barbara windsor quits eastenders
Barbara Windsor has announced that she will be leaving Eastenders after playing the role of Peggy Mitchell for the last fifteen years. the 72 year old says she will be sad to leave the soap but wants to spend more time with her husband.
Windsor joined the cast of Eastenders in 1994 playing the mother of established characters Grant and Phil Mitchell and of course Sam Mitchell. She was awarded with an MBE in 1999 and A Lifetime Acheivment Award for her work on the soap at the British Soap Awards in May this year.
High profile story lines involving Windsor include the bizarre love triangle involving Peggy Mitchell with Frank and Pat Butcher, her battle with breast cancer and her failed marriage to crooked businessman Archie.
Peggy Mitchell’s constant battles with Pat Butcher also resulted in a pop record in which the two slagged each other off with affectionate Eastenders terms like “You Bitch”, “You Cow” etc.
In real life the actress who will always be remembered by most for her roles in the Carry On films, married her toyboy and third husband Scott Mitchell in 2000. She will leave the series next year.
