The Eastenders actress, Jo Joyner, who plays Tanya Branning in the soap, has shown concern over the sites such as Facebook and Bebo that impersonate her.
The 30-year-old, soap star said “It really worries me as I don’t have a Facebook or Bebo profile or anything like that. We’ve had instances where kids have arranged to meet up with me – or some of the other Eastenders actors – in person. But it’s not really us they’re speaking to. It’s a pretty scary situation. There’s nothing I can do to control the sites that are already up, though there are a couple that have been stopped. We report them to child protection authorities, but you can see that there are still kids writing to these people, who reply and pretend they’re me. I wish I could do more to stop it.”
These sites need to be stopped before something happens, if it hasn’t already. Tighter controls need to be put in place for social networking sites to protect children.
