It was the first ever Digital Spy Soap Awards, and Eastenders walked away with seven of them.
The popular BBC soap won Best Soap and Best Single Episode for the wedding of Phil and Stella. The Most Popular Actress was Jo Joyner who plays Tanya Branning, beating Lacey Turner (Stacey Slater) and Coronation Street’s Tina O’Brien (Sarah Platt).
The Best Onscreen Partnership went to Samantha Janus (Ronnie Mitchell) and Rita Simons (Roxy Mitchell), with Rita also being awarded with the Best Newcomer Gong.
Diederick Santer, the Executive Producer of Eastenders said “Winning these awards are lovely. Thank you – and thanks to the DS forums for the support they’ve given us. From what I’ve seen on the forums, the members are discerning, passionate and real soap connoisseurs. So to get approval from them is quite an achievement.”
Hollyoaks won five awards including Storyline of the Year for John Paul and Craig’s affair and James Sutton (John Paul McQueen) was named the Most Popular Actor.
Coronation Street won a solitary award for Jack P Shepherd as Villain of the Year who plays the evil David Platt.
The Bill was named Best Serial Drama and Emmerdale received absolutely nothing.
